Use of waste recovery to transition to a circular economy

This methodology provides a way to quantify emission reductions from the recovery of waste materials that would otherwise be landfilled, incinerated, or openly burned. These disposal practices are major sources of greenhouse gases, particularly methane and carbon dioxide, and lead to the permanent loss of materials.

By recovering waste into products that can replace virgin raw materials, this methodology supports projects that reduce emissions by avoiding conventional disposal and by displacing the need for emissions-intensive extraction and processing.

This methodology can be used for both offsetting and insetting projects, requiring that recovered outputs meet quality standards, are traceable through the value chain, and do not result in unintended consequences such as leakage.

Public consultation is open between June 16th to July 16th, 2025 (30 days).
