Using low-carbon building materials
The construction sector is a major contributor to climate change, responsible for over 11% of embodied global emissions, largely from the production of materials like steel and cement. By replacing conventional high-emission materials with lower-carbon alternatives and products with bio-based content, construction projects can significantly reduce emissions and, in certain cases, store carbon for the long term.

Use of low-carbon building materials to transition to low-carbon construction
Methodology ID: PM.0003
Date of Issue: January 19 , 2026
Developer: Proba World BV
Our methodology provides a framework for measuring and verifying both emissions reductions and carbon removals in the construction industry. It includes two types of interventions:
• Switching to low-carbon building materials to generate GHG reduction credits
• Using bio-based materials that store carbon to generate GHG removal credits
At the core of the methodology is the PCF/LCA comparison analysis, which transparently evaluates and quantifies climate benefits based on the full carbon footprint of building products from raw material extraction to end-of-life.
