Search # Proba supports ofi with fertilizer pilot to bring lower-emission Brazilian coffee into its product carbon footprints 28 Oct 2026 ![Picture of Proba](https://proba.earth/hs-fs/hubfs/Subheading%20(7).png?width=40&name=Subheading%20(7).png) [Proba](https://proba.earth/probas-blog/author/proba) ![](https://proba.earth/hubfs/Blog%20featured%20image%20(33).png) **Proba supports ofi with fertilizer pilot to bring lower-emission Brazilian coffee into its product carbon footprints** One of Brazil’s largest coffee exporters, [ofi](https://www.ofi.com/en-us), has wrapped up its first-year pilot in Minas Gerais, Brazil, using one of Proba's GHG methodologies as the quantification framework for fertilizer-related emission reductions in coffee production. The pilot tested controlled release fertilizers (CRFs) blends that applied across participating coffee farms, producing arabica coffee. The idea behind CRF is simple: its coating slows the release of nitrogen to match what the plant actually needs, rather than flooding the soil all at once. Less excess nitrogen sitting in the soil means fewer losses to the air and water, meaning lower nitrous oxide emissions. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas almost 300x more powerful than CO2 and it’s the reason for the large carbon footprint of modern agriculture. Coffee is a useful place to test this. Minas Gerais is one of the largest coffee growing regions in the world, and it runs on a single annual harvest, so a season gives you a clear picture of how CRF performs over a full crop cycle. Proba applied its [PM.0005 methodology](https://proba.earth/crf_methodology) to the data ofi collected together with their growers, building an evidence-based emission factor for CRF use rather than leaning on generic defaults.These emission factors feed into ofi’s Digital Footprint Calculator (DFC), which is certified by Carbon Trust. This means the effect of CRF can be reflected in the product carbon footprints ofi provides to its customers.
