Lowering the carbon footprint of fertilizer.

Fertiberia, a European leader in sustainable fertilization, is cutting the emissions tied to the nitrogen fertilizer it produces and sells across the EU. It does this by replacing conventional Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN27), made with fossil-based ammonia, with a low-carbon version made using green hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia under Fertiberia's Impact Zero product line: the final product being Impact Zero Calcium Ammonium Nitrate 27. The fertilizer is chemically identical and performs the same way in the field, so farmers change nothing about how they work. The difference sits upstream, in how the ammonia is produced.

Fertiberia's low-carbon CAN27 has a third-party verified PCF of 0.145 kgCO₂e per kg of product (0.54 tCO₂e per tonne of nitrogen), representing an approximately 83% reduction against the conventional grey CAN27 baseline of 3.1 tCO₂e per tonne of nitrogen.

The project quantifies this drop in carbon intensity at the level of the selling region, starting with France as an example EU market, and makes the verified reduction available to value chain partners sourcing agricultural commodities from that same supply shed. These partners can then claim the reduction within their own value chain as a Scope 3 insetting benefit, supported by Fertiberia's internal safeguards that keep the low-carbon attribute detached from the physical product it is sold with.

The project runs under Proba methodology PM.0002, Adoption of low-emission fertilizer strategies to transition to low-carbon agriculture, and follows the Proba Standard. It uses a book-and-claim chain-of-custody model, tracking the low-carbon volumes through documented sales and registry records rather than through physical segregation. Independent validation and verification is carried out by an approved third-party body.
